The Mimosa Cake: Italian Women’s Day at Ceci’s
In Italy, March 8th marks La Festa della Donna, the Italian Women’s Day. Since the postwar years, mimosa flowers have been gifted as a gesture of respect and solidarity.
And because it’s Italy, the tradition has a dessert. The Mimosa Cake emerged in mid-century Italy as an edible symbol of Women’s Day, inspired by the flower itself: light, bright, unmistakably yellow, and intentionally simple.
Next weekend, Chef Francesco and Francesca of Ceci’s Gastronomia marks the occasion with Torta Mimosa al Limone, a classic layered cake filled with lemon diplomatica cream and finished with fine cake crumbs that mirror the mimosa blossom themselves.
The cake is available whole or by the slice, each served with a sprig of mimosa flowers to go with it.
