If you come from a Persian family, your baba joon (farsi for father dearest) has likely made the claim that Iran invented backgammon— like beer, poetry, the refrigerator, and all the best things in life. As a board game played across the world for centuries, its origin story is widely up for debate... but he may actually be right on this one. Not long ago, archeologists found the oldest known backgammon board in Iran, dating back to 3200 BC. THAT’S 5,200 YEARS OLD (not a typo). 

Whether you're a beginner or baba joon status, join us on Thursday, October 19th for a cozy hang over bottomless bowls of hearty Persian stew, homemade flatbread and an autumn shirazi salad by Homa LA. 

We’ve got the East Side pros Silver Lake Backgammon holding it down with quick lessons over long pours by Club Tee Gee (beverages sold separately) and rare records by Jacknife Records (the shop across the street.)

FOOD BY HOMA LA
A'ash– short for A'ash Reshteh— is an ancient Iranian dish, somewhere between a soup and a stew. It's a carefully calculated melting pot of flavors, textures and toppings (much like LA itself.) 

A'ash combines legumes, fresh and dried herbs, aromatics, and pasta for good measure, plus crispy fried onions, crispy garlic chips, mint oil, and Kashk (an umami bomb of whey proportions.) In Persian culture, the soup is a symbol of good fortune and traditionally cooked in the autumn and winter. 

Enjoy alongside an autumnal shirazi salad (think kabocha squash, pomegranate, and root vegetables) + herbed feta flatbread and saffron rice pudding for dessert.  

HOMA is simple Persian comfort food with a California sensibility. It's a homage to Chef Nima's Persian grandmother and her cuisine, drawing upon childhood memories of the wild scents of warm rice, of dipping their fingers into rich sauces and tasting the all day stews his "madar joon" (grandma) prepared.

Silverlake Backgammon Club & Provisions is a community for lovers of backgammon, all things tasty, and natural wines. No experience necessary, just an open heart. Bring a board if you have one, and come enjoy the movement!

DRINKS BY CLUB TEE GEE
Opened originally in 1946, Club Tee Gee is a 1970s-style dive bar in Atwater Village with a sparkled ceiling, juke box, and dim lamps for lighting. Food and backgammon included, drinks sold separately. 

RECORDS BY JACKNIFE RECORDS
We are a small store across the street from Club Tee Gee that carries recordings on all formats with a focus on Vinyl Records & Audio Cassette Tapes. Our goal is to represent the bigger musical picture rather than a magnified look at a single genre or scene. We are interested in nearly all music be it the classics, the forgotten or the completely unusual.
